Posture Related Pain

In today’s fast-paced, desk-bound world, hours spent sitting—whether at work, commuting, or even relaxing at home—can heavily impact our posture and, by extension, our health. Poor posture during prolonged sitting is one of the leading contributors to discomfort, neck tension, shoulder pain, and persistent back issues. The team at Achieve Health understands this challenge and specialises in providing solutions through expert physiotherapy. By assessing and correcting postural habits, we can help reduce pain and improve your overall well-being.

Why Posture Matters

Maintaining good posture involves balancing your body so that supporting muscles and ligaments are used efficiently, reducing strain. When we neglect this balance, overcompensation occurs, leading to muscle fatigue and long-term joint stress. This imbalance can manifest in numerous ways, including:

Often, slouching or a forward head position places strain on the neck and upper back.

The lower back endures significant pressure during prolonged sitting, especially when unsupported.

Poor posture is a common culprit behind tension headaches, often stemming from muscular tension in the neck and upper shoulders.

Sitting for extended periods can restrict blood flow, negatively impacting health and mobility.

Good posture is not just about avoiding discomfort; it’s about fostering a foundation for movement and health that keeps your body functioning optimally in the long run.

Signs You May Need Postural Support

Do you often feel discomfort after sitting at your desk all day? Or do you experience stiffness when standing up after long periods of sitting? These signs could indicate postural imbalances. Some of the most common symptoms include:

  • Persistent back and neck pain
  • Frequent headaches
  • Rounded or “hunched” shoulders
  • Muscle fatigue and stiffness
  • Tingling or numbness in the limbs

If any of these sound familiar, a postural assessment could be incredibly beneficial.

How Physiotherapy at Achieve Health Can Help

Our physiotherapy team at Achieve Health specialises in diagnosing and treating postural challenges through tailored treatment plans. Here’s how our services can make a difference:

Using advanced techniques, we thoroughly assess your body alignment, looking for areas where muscular strain or imbalance occurs. This evaluation includes analysing your sitting habits and even your workstation setup. Identifying these key areas allows us to create a personalised treatment plan designed to address specific issues and prevent further discomfort.

Our approach is built on evidence-based methods, incorporating manual therapy, targeted stretching, and strengthening exercises to address imbalances. This comprehensive treatment relieves muscle tightness and corrects alignment, providing both immediate relief and long-term support for your posture.

Daily movement is key to maintaining good posture, so we create customised exercise programs that target flexibility, strength, and endurance. These exercises support better posture and alleviate the strain associated with prolonged sitting. With a tailored program, you’ll notice improvements in core strength and body awareness, both crucial for maintaining proper alignment.

Small adjustments can make a world of difference. Our physiotherapists provide ergonomic guidance on desk setup, chair positioning, and ways to break up long periods of sitting with simple, healthy movement. With ergonomic recommendations in place, your workspace can become a supportive environment that encourages better posture and reduces stiffness.

Prolonged sitting can affect your entire movement pattern, making daily activities feel more tiring. Our physiotherapy team can guide you through movement re-education to restore functional, healthy movement patterns, allowing your body to move freely and efficiently.

Why Physiotherapy Intervention Matters for Posture

The benefits of physiotherapy go beyond immediate relief. By addressing posture through physiotherapy, you’re investing in your long-term health, with benefits that include:

By targeting and relieving areas of tension, physiotherapy can significantly reduce or even eliminate chronic pain.

Better posture leads to a greater range of motion, making it easier to stay active and maintain a healthy lifestyle.

Improved posture translates to more efficient movement, whether at work, during exercise, or in daily tasks.

Good posture can positively impact mental health, helping you feel more confident and energised throughout the day.

Frequently Asked Questions

Regular postural assessments, especially if you spend a lot of time sitting, are recommended every six to twelve months or as needed if discomfort arises.

Absolutely! Physiotherapists can provide specific exercises to do at home, targeting areas that need extra support, allowing you to integrate good posture habits into your daily routine.

Poor posture can lead to chronic pain, which can strain mental well-being. Additionally, posture can influence mood and energy levels, with better posture often linked to improved outlook and confidence.

Ergonomic tools can certainly help, especially if used correctly. However, they’re most effective when paired with proper sitting habits and regular movement breaks.

Some people notice improvements within a few sessions, especially with exercises and ergonomic changes. However, achieving lasting results usually requires consistent effort over several weeks to months, depending on individual needs.

I’ve had appointments with both Alex and Emily at Edgbaston/Moseley and have been amazed by the improvement since beginning with them. They have been able to both relieve muscle pain/tightness whilst giving me a bespoke training plan to improve my future health. I would certainly recommend them.

I have been having treatment from Jezzi for for a couple of years now for different issues. She is able to pinpoint the areas causing the issues and work on them with long term plans to prevent them from reappearing. I have seen different physios over many years but I have to say her treatment is the best for me.

I have been going for physiotherapy at Achieve (Edgbaston) for over 4 years and continue to do so. I have seen Rickie, Jezzy and Mitzi. They are all great. Achieve was recommended to me and I have recommended them to others seeking out a physiotherapist. Definitely give them a try if you are looking for a physio.

‘Highly recommending’ Achieve Health may be a massive understatement… I am currently seeing Rickie and Beth for Physiotherapy and deep tissue work and I am super impressed! Not only are they both immensely knowledge and professional, but the teamwork between them also means my sessions are specific, targeted and I am always aware of the steps needed in my rehabilitation, which I have not experienced at other physiotherapy establishments! Having a gym where they can show and watch my rehab exercises is also a massive plus for me! Thanks Achieve!!!!

Just over a year ago I decided to finally see a physio after 6months of back pain at 25! I couldn't stand up properly, sit down or lie down. I went to see Jezzie and she pretty quickly narrowed down the possibilities and got to work. Over the past year she's methodically brought me back to my best, something i've not felt for a few years, and offered plenty of exercises/workout plans to continue on my own. Now I go for maintenance appointments every quarter. Jezzie is conversational and knows her job and physiotherapy like the back of her hand, she has fountain of knowledge which puts me at ease as a client.
