What’s important
The Power of Hormones, VO2 Max, and Nutrition
Hormones are essential for controlling functions like metabolism, energy levels and overall well being. The importance of understanding and enhancing hormone function for achieving peak vitality is emphasised in The Huderman Lab podcast and Peter Attias The Drive podcast.
Studies indicate that imbalances in hormones such as testosterone, cortisol and insulin can lead to health issues, including loss of muscle mass, weight gain, decreased energy levels and a higher risk of conditions like diabetes and heart disease (Bhasin et al., 2010; Anagnostis et al., 2009).
Furthermore your VO2 max level, a measure of how your body uses oxygen during exercise, is a factor in assessing cardiovascular fitness and overall health. Research shows that individuals with a higher VO2 max level are less likely to develop diseases like heart disease, stroke or certain cancers (Kodama et al., 2009; Lee et al., 2011).
Maintaining proper nutrition is key to supporting hormone balance, optimising VO2 max performance and enhancing vitality. Our group of nutrition experts will collaborate with you to create a customised meal schedule that suits your requirements and aspirations -guaranteeing that you get the mix of nutrients to energise your body and aid in your pursuit of peak wellness.
The Importance of Lean Muscle Mass and Strength
Keeping up an adequate amount of muscle mass and strength is crucial for overall wellbeing and energy. Lean muscle mass not boosts strength and stamina but also plays a vital role in metabolism and disease prevention.
Studies have indicated that individuals with higher levels of lean levels of muscle mass are less likely to develop metabolic conditions, like type 2 diabetes and obesity (Srikanthan & Karlamangla 2011; Wolfe, 2006). Furthermore, maintaining strength and muscle mass as we grow older can help prevent age related muscle loss (sarcopenia) and lower the risk of falls and fractures (Daly et al., 2014).
To enhance your strength and muscle growth our team of fitness experts will create a gym program designed specifically for your needs and objectives. Whether you aim to increase muscle mass, boost strength or enhance functional movement, our professionals will lead you through a safe and efficient training routine.

V02 Max:
VO2max and All-Cause Mortality:
- A study of 579 middle-aged men found that for every 1 ml/kg/min higher VO2max, there was a 9% lower risk of all-cause mortality over 11 years of follow-up.
- In the Cooper Center Longitudinal Study, low fitness (bottom 20% for VO2max) was associated with substantially higher risk of all-cause mortality in men (8.5x) and women (4.5x) compared to the top 40% of fitness levels.
- Each 1 MET (3.5 ml/kg/min) higher level of cardiorespiratory fitness was associated with 8% lower all-cause mortality risk in the UK Biobank study, after adjusting for confounders.
VO2max and Cardiovascular Disease:
- Low VO2max (<5 METs) is considered a cardiovascular disease risk factor, with higher VO2max levels associated with lower cardiovascular and coronary heart disease risk.[
- The Aerobics Center Longitudinal Study found that for every 1-MET higher level of fitness, there was a 15% lower risk of cardiovascular disease events in men and women.
- A meta-analysis concluded that higher VO2max was associated with lower risk of cardiovascular disease events and mortality, independent of BMI.
VO2max and Cancer:
- Higher VO2max has been linked to a lower risk of certain cancers like lung, breast, and colon cancer in several prospective studies.
- A pooled analysis found that every 5 ml/kg/min higher VO2max was associated with a 8-14% lower risk of cancer mortality.

Lean Muscle Mass:
- A study of over 14,000 adults found that higher levels of lean mass were associated with lower risks of metabolic syndrome, diabetes, and cardiovascular disease, independent of aerobic fitness levels.
- Research shows that age-related loss of muscle mass (sarcopenia) is linked to increased risk of falls, fractures, physical disability, and mortality in older adults
- Higher amounts of lean mass are associated with better insulin sensitivity and glucose metabolism, reducing risk of type 2 diabetes
- Maintaining lean mass as you age helps preserve resting metabolic rate and can aid in weight management.
Muscular Strength:
- Low muscle strength, as measured by grip strength, has been associated with increased risk of mortality, cardiovascular disease, and mobility limitations in several large studies.
- Greater muscular strength is linked to better functional capacity and ability to perform activities of daily living, especially in older adults.
- Resistance training to improve muscular strength can help prevent age-related loss of bone mineral density and reduce osteoporosis risk.
- Higher levels of muscular fitness are associated with more favourable body composition and cardiometabolic health markers like blood pressure and lipid profiles.

By the end of the session my pain was much lower and my rom was much improved. Very knowledgeable! Highly recommended by me! James Sprittles2024-03-06 I’ve had appointments with both Alex and Emily at Edgbaston/Moseley and have been amazed by the improvement since beginning with them. They have been able to both relieve muscle pain/tightness whilst giving me a bespoke training plan to improve my future health. I would certainly recommend them. Jagtar Marway2024-03-05 I have been having treatment from Jezzi for for a couple of years now for different issues. She is able to pinpoint the areas causing the issues and work on them with long term plans to prevent them from reappearing. I have seen different physios over many years but I have to say her treatment is the best for me. Rebecca Brennan2024-03-05 I have been going for physiotherapy at Achieve (Edgbaston) for over 4 years and continue to do so. I have seen Rickie, Jezzy and Mitzi. They are all great. Achieve was recommended to me and I have recommended them to others seeking out a physiotherapist. Definitely give them a try if you are looking for a physio. M Rai2024-03-05 I’ve been seeing Rick at Achieve Health over the past few months and he’s helped tremendously with my back pain. I highly recommend Achieve Health who provide a holistic assessment and a good mix of physical therapy with self-care advice to keep potential future issues at bay. Efe Okoro2024-03-05 ‘Highly recommending’ Achieve Health may be a massive understatement… I am currently seeing Rickie and Beth for Physiotherapy and deep tissue work and I am super impressed! Not only are they both immensely knowledge and professional, but the teamwork between them also means my sessions are specific, targeted and I am always aware of the steps needed in my rehabilitation, which I have not experienced at other physiotherapy establishments! Having a gym where they can show and watch my rehab exercises is also a massive plus for me! Thanks Achieve!!!! Manjinder Singh2024-03-04 Just over a year ago I decided to finally see a physio after 6months of back pain at 25! I couldn't stand up properly, sit down or lie down. I went to see Jezzie and she pretty quickly narrowed down the possibilities and got to work. Over the past year she's methodically brought me back to my best, something i've not felt for a few years, and offered plenty of exercises/workout plans to continue on my own. Now I go for maintenance appointments every quarter. Jezzie is conversational and knows her job and physiotherapy like the back of her hand, she has fountain of knowledge which puts me at ease as a client.Google rating score: 5.0 of 5, based on 239 reviews
