What Injuries Do Cross Fitters Suffer From and How Would Physio Help?
CrossFit has gained immense popularity as a high-intensity functional fitness program. It combines elements of weightlifting, cardio, and bodyweight exercises to create challenging workouts. While CrossFit offers many benefits, it also poses a risk of injuries due to the demanding nature of the exercises.
Below are some common injuries that Cross Fitters often experience and how physiotherapy can help in the recovery process.
Shoulder Injuries
The shoulders are highly involved in many CrossFit movements, such as overhead presses, pull-ups, and snatches. These repetitive motions and heavy loads can lead to shoulder injuries. Physiotherapy interventions may include manual therapy techniques, such as joint mobilization and deep massage, to alleviate pain and restore proper shoulder mechanics. Then we help by providing exercises to strengthen the rotator cuff muscles and improve stability in the shoulder joint.
Examples:
- Rotator Cuff Tears
- Shoulder Impingement
Wrist and Elbow Injuries
The wrist and elbow can also become injured through the repetitive grip and positions required in lifting. We can help by applying methods like soft tissue massage, mobilisation and technique changes to relieve discomfort and speed healing, as well as exercises to strengthen and increase the flexibility of the forearm/wrist muscles. In the same way a runner looks after their calves: cross fitters should be thinking about their forearms more!
Examples:
- Wrist Tendonitis
- Tennis Elbow
- Golfers Elbow
Knee Injuries
The high-impact movements in CrossFit, such as jumping, squatting, and lunging, can put a significant strain on the knees. These movements are often repeated heavily as well. Improper biomechanics, technique, tightness, weakness and more, can lead to a variety of knee injuries. Physiotherapy is key to treat, aid healing, address causes and rehabilitate. You may find we get you lifting better, and heavier, as we have extensive knowledge and training ability within functional fitness.
Examples:
- Patella Tendonitis
- Meniscus Tear
Lower Back Injuries
The repetitive lifting and dynamic movements in CrossFit can put significant stress on the lower back, leading to injuries such as disc herniation and sacroiliac joint dysfunction. It is key to have treatment, such as joint manipulation and manual therapy, to recover but also assessment on what caused the injury in the first place. We will assess your technique, biomechanics, range of movement and more – to ensure a safe return to lifting.
Examples:
- Disc Herniation
- Sacroiliac Joint Dysfunction
